City of Lost Souls

Synopsis

Late night screening: Little Joe presents City of Lost Souls (Rosa von Praunheim, 1983) Described as 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch in reverse' City of Lost Souls is a trans-spectacular musical starring a cast of gender outlaws including Jayne County, Angie Stardust and Tara O'Hara, and directed by Rosa von Praunheim, a key figure of the New German Cinema movement and a pioneer of queer cinema. Angie has a lot on her plate running a boarding house called Pension Stardust filled with misfit lodgers: an erotic trapeze duo, a magical group therapist, assorted layabouts, nymphomaniacs and Lila (Jayne County), a Southern blonde who dreams of Hollywood. These tenants also staff Angie’s fast food enterprise, Burger Queen. When Lila becomes impregnated by a Communist who promises to make her a superstar on East German television, havoc ensues. The screening will be preceded by an extended introduction by Sam Ashby, the founder, editor, designer, and publisher of Little Joe: A Book about Queers and Cinema. Join us after the screening for an afterparty inspired by the world of the film: For one night only, Aphroditios brings the colorful and crazy world of 1980s Berlin to Nicosia, where souls are encouraged to lose themselves in a kaleidoscopic mass of queer bodies, burgers and dancing like there’s no tomorrow.
